THE Amazon Web Services and its partners bring smart technologies to its island Naxos with his work Smart Island.
AWS and more than 20 Greek and multinational companies are collaborating for the digital transformation of the island of Naxos.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced during a special event held in Naxos, her design for the Smart Island. Smart Island is a pilot project that will leverage AWS Cloud technology to improve services provided to residents as well as the overall experience of the many visitors the island welcomes each year.
Among the speakers of the event were the Minister of Digital Governance Kyriakos Pierrakakis, the Minister of Development and Investments Adonis Georgiadesthe Secretary General of Aegean and Island Policy Emmanuel Koutoulakis, the Regional Governor of South Aegean George Hatzimarkos and the Mayor of Naxos and Small Cyclades Dimitris Lianos.
Primary objective of Smart Island is the development of solutions that will respond to the challenges faced by islands, such as Naxos, and related to infrastructure management, service provision and the high dependence on mainland infrastructure due to its remote geographical location. The Smart Island project aspires to create a new field of high-tech solutions that will help local communities located in remote areas to face modern challenges. The project also demonstrates the importance of cooperation between the public and private sectors for the benefit of local communities, the economy and the environment.
The project is the result of a collaboration between AWS and more than 20 multinational and Greek companies, including some of the most innovative start-ups and public organizations. Smart Island will develop solutions for smart mobility, primary health and transportation of goods. These solutions include the digital recording of passenger ship arrivals and departures and transportation of biological and pharmaceutical material using drones. Overall, the island’s existing infrastructure, such as the marina, power grid and water management systems, are being upgraded through Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and smart infrastructure management systems. The integration of these technologies will make public services more sustainable and more efficient, while within the framework of the project, public sector workers as well as local actors from across the South Aegean region will have the opportunity to develop their digital skills and utilize the opportunities offered through technology.

Through the innovation ecosystems that are developing throughout the country, Greece is emerging itself on an international scale as an innovation ecosystem, where digital applications and pioneering ideas find fertile ground to settle, grow and interact” he said the Minister of Digital Governance Kyriakos Pierrakakis.
“Amazon Web Services’ investment in the island of Naxos puts Greece at the forefront of the world. This is a game changer investment as it creates a new digital environment on one of the most important Greek islands contributing decisively to the improvement of everyday life for its residents and strengthening its attractiveness as a global tourist destination. I am extremely happy that during my days as the competent Minister of Development & Investments, Greece is breaking one record after another in investments and emerging as an investment hot-spot of the planet. We are working hard and with a plan in order for Greece to be among the protagonists of the 21st century” said the Minister of Development and Investments Adonis Georgiades.
“Smart Island is a project based on cloud solutions, with the aim of improving the quality of life of the residents of Naxos and promoting the island as an even more attractive destination for visitors and digital nomads. We want to work with the local government and the people of Naxos and we hope, with the experience we will gain with them, to bring this project to other islands, provincial regions and cities” said Cameron Brooks, Director, Europe Public Sector, Amazon Web Services.
The project is carried out with the support of the Greek Government, the South Aegean Region and the Municipality of Naxos and Small Cyclades. It is the result of a collaboration between AWS and 23 other companies and organizations including: Aegean Neorion Innovation Center, Altus LSA, Cisco, CyTech, Deloitte, eFood, Eunice Energy Group, Eurobank, IoTech, Lambda Automata, Nova, Onex Technologies, OTE Academy, SaMMy , Sparkworks, Travelotopos, Vodafone, Public Employment Service (DYPA), Sustainable Islands Network – DAPHNI, National Natural Sciences Research Center “Demokritos”, Chamber of Cyclades, Hellenic Space Center and ELTA.
