After a series of tests over the past few months, YouTube has officially announced several design changes, including Ambient Mode, across Android, iOS, web and smart TVs, i.e. across all platforms.

Listening to… popular demand, YouTube changed its dark theme to be “even darker so colors stand out on your screen” on the web (via browsers), mobile and smart TVs. Right now it’s grey, and soon it will be closer to the black background it has YouTube Music.

When this theme is enabled, you can enable a “distinctive effect so that the background color of the app adjusts to match the video in the player (ambience)”. With YouTube’s ambient mode, the video appears to leave a subtle glowing tint on the video title just below the player.

“The color was a key issue for us during the development phase. We wanted to add life to our apps without taking anything away from viewers’ habits, whether that’s enjoying their recommended videos or browsing for new content,” commented YouTube.

Context mode is more visible on web and mobile when the dark theme is enabled, and YouTube also uses it in playlists as part of a card that shows “more details, of each playlist.”

Beneath the video player, YouTube has now embedded several captions/links into capsule-shaped buttons: Like, Share, Download, Save, and Subscribe. The Register button will also have a higher contrast, which the company believes will make it “easier to find and much more accessible” to users even if the letters are no longer red. Additionally, YouTube links in video descriptions will also “change to buttons.”
