The American president Joe Biden received his third dose of an updated COVID-19 vaccine yesterday, and urged his countrymen to follow suit as winter approaches, and urged American citizens to get vaccinated against the coronavirus as soon as possible.
The 79-year-old Democratic politician, who had symptoms of COVID-19 three months ago, had already received a second booster dose in late March.
The extra dose, which Mr Biden received at the White House with reporters in attendance, was developed to treat two sub-variants of SARS-CoV-2.
The US president announced initiatives aimed at encouraging Americans to get booster shots before the end of the year ahead of holiday travel and family gatherings.
“I call on all Americans (…) to get their vaccine the sooner”, Mr. Biden characteristically stated. “Hundreds of people are still dying every day because of COVID, hundreds. It is likely that this number will increase in the winter, but (…) almost all deaths could be prevented this year.”
He assured that his government and major pharmacy chains — whose executives were present yesterday at the US presidency for the occasion — are working in concert to guarantee that booster doses will be widely available and free.
Referring to the politicization of vaccination in the US, he called for “let’s start again from scratch as a country, let’s put the old fights over COVID behind us, put aside partisanship.”
As of this stage just 20 million Americans, including one in five seniors, have received a booster dose, according to the US government.
The pandemic continues to kill in the US, where 2,566 deaths were recorded in the last week out of a total of 260,808 cases, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). With more than 1 million dead since the pandemic struck, the country has been hit hardest by it in the world.
