Musk announces $8 monthly subscription to verify Twitter accounts

Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, announced on Tuesday (1st) the soon launch of an $8 monthly subscription for users who want to certify the authenticity of their account and receive fewer advertisements.

The social network has been offering paid functions since last year, but Musk wants a new plan to diversify the platform’s sources of income.

“The current system of lords and peasants, with those with the blue mark and those without, is a bad… Power to the people! Blue for $8/month,” tweeted the Tesla and SpaceX boss, who finalized the purchase of Twitter last Thursday.

In addition to offering verification privileges, the new program would take over the existing functions of Twitter Blue — currently available for $5 a month — which allows, for example, users to edit their tweets.

Currently, only certain profiles can apply for the blue authenticity mark, such as governments, companies, media, political, cultural or sports personalities, among others. And they can lose their credential if they don’t respect the platform’s rules.

On Friday, Musk asked the company’s engineers to work on overhauling the system.

Subscribers will also have other benefits: their tweets will appear in priority, they will be able to publish longer videos and audios and they will be exposed to “half the advertising”.

The subscription price will be adjusted according to each country.

“It will also bring revenue to Twitter, to reward content creators,” he concluded.

Musk, the richest man in the world, has repeatedly argued that the platform interests him because this “public place” is essential for democracy and “helping humanity”.

He indicated that profitability was not his priority. But Twitter is a network whose income comes 90% from advertising and has never been very profitable compared to its Californian neighbors Meta (Facebook, Instagram) and Google (YouTube).
