In a landmark report Facebook-owned Meta described efforts to remove “suspicious” accounts from the network – What they found
Her admission is causing global concern among internet users Meta that the threat of spyware that aims to monitor—sniff information—from citizens’ accounts is still present and even a persistent threat because surveillance companies evolve their capabilities and tend to adapt.
In a typical report the company that owns the Facebook described the social media team’s efforts to remove “suspicious” accounts from the network, including two linked to companies in Russia, one linked to Israel and another that referred to a company in China.
In the aforementioned cases, Meta said the accounts were used to steal users’ personal information in an attempt to hack into their Facebook accounts and Instagram
For example, Meta said it took down more than 100 Facebook and Instagram accounts linked to a company called Avalanche in Russia, which it said was giving paid access to a platform that enables Internet espionage.
Meta said a number of individuals and groups were targeted using the Russian network, including environmental activists, members of the media, US NGOs and politicians.
Other accounts removed from Meta platforms include a New York-based company called Social Links, which was originally based in Russia, and Cyberglobes, based in Israel.
