A Moscow court today fined Alphabet Inc. Google’s 2 million rubles (24,259 euros). because it did not delete content that Russia considers banned, in the context of a wider dispute between Moscow and the American technology giant.
Russia has fined Google a percentage of its annual Russian turnover for repeatedly failing to remove banned content from search engines and YouTube. This is the strongest move Moscow has made so far to restrict foreign technology companies.
Google confirmed the fine, but did not comment further. Google had paid more than 32 million rubles (388,147 euros) in previous fines.
Russia also imposed a fine of 4 million rubles (48,518 euros) on the Telegram messaging app. Telegram did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Two other administrative cases against Google will be heard on November 29, the court announced, in order for the Google representative to have more time to study the material of the case.
