With its wave of complaints and disgruntled users Twitter from the day his property passed into his hands Elon Muskin October 2022, to continue, the presentation of a new application, based on the short texts, which create threads, was only a matter of time.

The reason for it Threads, a text-based social platform for public conversations, launched on the App Store on July 5, climbing to the top of the free apps list in just one day. And while the app looks like it was designed as a Twitter alternative, it actually comes from Instagram.

More and more users are switching from the popular app to its newer alternative. Just like Twitter, Threads allows users to share their thoughts, memes, and opinions through text-based posts of up to 500 characters. Posts can also include photos, videos and links.

There is, however, one condition: To use the application, you must log in using your Instagram account. This, however, is somewhat binding, as users have discovered that you cannot delete your Threads account without also deleting the linked Instagram account.

How to create a Threads account

  1. After you download the application, the username will be automatically transferred from the instagram account you will connect. To start creating a profile, simply tap on the account name. You will not need to create a new password. If you want to create an account for a different Instagram profile, select “Switch Accounts.
  2. You will then have the option to either use your pre-existing profile picture and bio from your Instagram profile, or customize them however you want. Next, you should choose whether you want your account to be public or private. Finally, you will be given the opportunity to follow the same accounts you have on Instagram, but also to search for other users with whom you share common interests through the home page.
  3. You will then be taken to the How Threads Work page, which explains in detail how your data will be used. The page also includes an explanation of “fediverse,” a new social media model the app uses that allows people to follow and interact with each other across different platforms. By pressing the “Join Threads” button you can now start your activity in the app.
  4. You can’t view Instagram posts in the Threads feed, but you can access a user’s IG account through the app by going to their profile and tapping the camera icon in the top right corner.
  5. To start a thread, you tap the pen and notepad icon and type your thought. You can even attach photos and videos up to 5 minutes long by tapping the paperclip icon. When you write what you want, you press the “Publish” button on the right side of the page. Just like on Twitter, here too you can like posts by pressing the heart icon, leave a comment by pressing the speech bubble, and repost by pressing the double arrows. To read replies to a thread, tap the number of replies below the post.
  6. The Threads feed, which you can access by tapping the house icon in the bottom left, contains a mix of people you follow as well as recommended users. You can also see who has tagged you or replied to a thread and track your interactions with verified users.

In Threads, everything seems to be part of a flow. Unlike Twitter, there is no section “What happens”which lets you know what’s trending or lets you browse other feeds, and there are no hashtags to help group content.

If you’ve already tried the app, you’ll have noticed that it still has quite a few issues. Showing everyone’s threads in one stream is more tedious than useful, and the fact that you’re only allowed to search for users and not threads with specific keywords isn’t very user-friendly. Therefore, for now it has not managed to surpass Twitter in functionality, but no one can rule out the possibility that this application will evolve in the future in the #1 trend.

Try the application and find out if it suits you!
