This year, 86.9% of the country’s households have access to the internet from their residence (a 54.4% increase compared to 2013), according to an ELSTAT survey.
At the same time, 85% of the age population 16-74 years old used the internet in the first quarter of 2023, recording an increase of 2.2% compared to 2022.
Also according to the ELSTAT survey data, daily or almost daily use of the internet is carried out by 94.1% of those who used the internet in the first quarter of 2023.
Regarding the reasons for using the internet, the main activities are reading news online in websitesnewspapers, magazines, etc search information about products and services (89.2% and 89.1%, respectively).
These percentages concern 9 out of 10 people aged 16-74 who used the internet in the first quarter of 2023.
The activities that recorded the largest increase in the last year are selling goods or services (e.g. on e-Bay, Facebook Marketplace, Shpock) (14.9%) and sending an opinion on social or political issues (e.g. e.g. on websites or social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube) (10.9%).
The biggest declines, in the last year, were recorded in participating in online consultations or voting on social or political issues (29.5%) and in searching for health information (15.9%).
In the total population of the country, approximately two out of three (67%) used e-government services, during the period April 2022-March 2023, for personal reasons. There is no statistically significant change (+0.9%) compared to the period April 2021-March 2022 (66.4%).
*Regarding the population aged 16-74 who used the internet during the period April 2022-March 2023, the percentage of those who used e-government services, for personal reasons, amounts to 77.8% (-1.5%) .
*Approximately 6 out of 10 (61.8%) received official documents in their personal account (tax payment, copy of criminal record, notarial acts and census certificates, vaccination certificate, rapid test result, vaccination appointment notification and reminder, prescription referral, result nationwide exams, etc.) through a website or application of a public service or authority.
*4 out of 10 (39.1%) made an appointment with a public service through a website or app, for personal reasons. Typical examples are appointments with KEP, EFKA, OAED, Tax Office (AADE), with an NHS doctor in a Primary Health Care Unit – including the appointment for vaccination against Covid-19.
12% of the population aged 16-74, who used the internet during the period April 2022-March 2023, submitted their tax return themselves online. A decrease of 12.4% compared to the previous year is recorded.
*5 out of 10 (49.8%) submitted an online application for an official document, certificate, allowance (including market pass, power pass, fuel pass, etc.) or filed a complaint / complaint / objection. An increase of 19.4% compared to the last year (41.7%).
56.8% of those who did not submit an online application for an official document or certificate, allowance and did not submit a complaint / complaint / objection did not do so because they did not have to submit an application, complaint, etc. The reasons given by those who had to submit an application, complaint, etc. and did not submit is that:

Of the country’s total population aged 16-74, two out of three people (66.4%) carried out, during the period April 2022-March 2023, electronic identification, with a high or basic/adequate level of assurance, for personal reasons.
*The percentage of those who carried out electronic identification, high or basic/adequate level of assurance, for personal reasons, amounts to 77%.
*Of those who carried out a high or basic/adequate level of assurance online identification, 9 in 10 (90.9%) were identified to use services provided by public services and authorities, and 8 in 10 (79.3%) to use services provided from private businesses such as online banking.
*3 out of 10 (29.9%) of those who did not perform electronic identification, did not do so because they were not aware of its existence.
*43.6% of those who knew about electronic identification and had a means of electronic identification, did not do so because they prefer handling their matters by personal communication or because they did not have the necessary knowledge to use it.
About e-commerce:
*55.3% of the population aged 16-74, who have ever used the internet, even once, made, in the first quarter of 2023, some electronic purchase or order of goods or services via the internet, for personal use. Compared to the corresponding percentage a year ago (53.2%) an increase of 4% is recorded, while an increase of 104.8% is recorded compared to 2013. Regarding people who bought or ordered online physical products (ie, products that not in digital form) for personal use, it is noted that:
*73.6% of people aged 16-74 bought clothing (including sportswear), footwear and accessories (bags, jewelry, etc.),
*44.1% of people bought food that is distributed (delivery) from restaurants, fast food chains, catering, etc.,
*27.3% of people bought sports goods, excluding sports clothes and shoes included in clothing and footwear,
*27.2% of people bought computers, tablets, mobile phones and their accessories (printers, cables, cases, headphones, etc.),
*25.3% of people bought cosmetics, beauty or health products, and
*19% of people bought food or drinks from a supermarket (physical or online stores).
Regarding products purchased in digital format:
*26.3% of people bought movies or series, either as a streaming service or as a digital download,
*13.1% of people bought music, either as a streaming service or as a digital download,
*8.4% of people bought software for PC or other devices, including upgrades;
*6% of people bought mobile, tablet, PC or game console games.
Regarding the most purchased services:
*37.3% of people bought internet subscriptions or mobile connections,
*32.3% of people bought tickets for cultural events or leisure (cinema, theater, concerts, etc.),
*22% of people bought a subscription for electricity, water supply, natural gas, etc.,
*11.8% of people bought tickets for sporting events.
The survey also recorded information regarding the purchase of transportation services and accommodation services, both by businesses and natural persons/individuals, in
framework of the cooperative economy. Purchases of these services recorded an increase in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the first quarter of 2022.
Particularly:
*38.3% of the age group purchased transport / commuting services from public transport companies such as KTEL, public transport, taxi companies (including UBER), airlines and ferry companies, etc. A 37.3% increase was recorded in Q1 2023 compared to Q1 2022 (27.9% in 2022).
*1.6% of people bought transport / travel services from natural persons / individuals through online platforms or applications. An increase of 14.3% was recorded in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the first quarter of 2022 (1.4% in 2022).
*25.9% of people bought accommodation services (accommodation) from businesses such as hotels or travel agencies. A 53.3% increase was recorded in Q1 2023 compared to Q1 2022 (16.9% in 2022).
*16.8% of people bought accommodation services from natural persons / individuals through online platforms or applications, such as Airbnb, Homeaway, ihaHolidays. A 110% increase was recorded in the first quarter of 2023 compared to 2022 (8% last year).
Regarding digital skills, 6 in 10 (59.1%) have at least basic digital skills.
At the same time, 54% of those who used the internet in the first quarter of the year and saw on social media or news websites information, videos, photos that they considered untrue or questionable (40.6%), checked them. Of these, 80.1% checked through other online sources, 23.8% participated in online discussions, and 45.9% searched offline sources.
Finally, for the first time, information was collected on whether those who used the internet in the first quarter saw messages and news about specific people or specific groups of people that they considered offensive or even hostile. The survey shows that 3 out of 10 (30.3%) reported seeing related messages/news on blogs, vlogs, social media or news pages.
