More than a third of Facebook’s Marketplace ads may be scams, according to a Sky News report.

In fact, research conducted recently in the United Kingdom summarizes that citizens lost almost 60 million pounds to scams on the platform in 2023.

Facebook Marketplace allows users to buy and sell new and used items – such as cars, watches, game consoles, electronics, shoes and bags.

A TBS team – which conducted the research – found that 34% of listings on the platform were misleading, with sellers using fraudulent tactics.

Some of these “tricks” were links to fake websites, demanding a down payment for the product, or denying a potential customer’s request to see the product in person.

The items most used as bait in Facebook Marketplace scams in 2023 were:

Vehicle / vehicle parts 21%
Phone 7%
Shoes and clothes 7%
Game consoles and peripherals 7%
Concert and festival tickets 6%
Small electronics (laptops, cameras, computers, drones, etc.) 5%
Furniture 5%
Electrical appliances 4%
Services 3%
Building materials and tools 3%
