So maybe it’s time to prepare…
What role could artificial intelligence play in our love lives? Nobody, is the first answer that comes to mind. And after this first reaction, comes a thought: Are his relationships in a good phase today? Probably not. The percentages of people who feel lonely are constantly increasing, the digitalization of communication has hardly helped to build meaningful relationships and, in general, everything shows that human relationships have enough issues to manage.
But then again, the idea of artificial intelligence mixing in our personal contacts sounds terrifying to say the least. But before we judge, let’s take a look at what exactly this means and what people’s first reactions are.
The world of romance is on the brink of an AI-driven transformation. This pivotal change is arguably as important as the advent of dating apps and is expected to revolutionize the way we find and connect with potential partners.
The burning question here is undoubtedly: “Can AI Really Improve the Dating Experience?”. The perspective is both interesting and complex. The reality of modern dating, with its mix of fleeting connections, confusing signals and a language filled with terms like breadcrumbing and ghosting, leaves plenty of room for help. Complaints about the current state of dating are widespread, indicating a clear need for improvement. Artificial intelligence is, according to many, the solution to these problems.
In fact, this impending revolution is already underway. In August 2023, Match Group, the conglomerate behind Tinder, Hinge and OkCupid, hired a vice president of innovation to lead artificial intelligence initiatives. Bumble has launched multiple new machine learning-based features, including one that leverages artificial intelligence based on preferences and past matches to increase the likelihood of success. Meanwhile, a sea of brand new AI-powered apps promise to perfect your dating profile, your flirting game, and generally enhance your digital interaction skills. Additionally, companies like Replika have gone a step further, even exploring the development of AI robots capable of engaging in virtual romantic relationships (?).
Can it really work?
The verdict is, so far, mixed. While there are promising developments, challenges remain. Daters seem generally open to taking advantage of this possibility: One survey found that 69% are excited about the ways in which artificial intelligence could make dating easier and more efficient. 68% believe it can help them feel more confident in apps. 86% believe it could help solve pervasive dating fatigue and 67% think it can make dating apps safer. There are, of course, those who remain wary, citing issues such as privacy concerns and catfishing.
In any case, as incompatible as artificial intelligence and romance may sound, their union is a fact, whether we are ready or not. So maybe it’s time to prepare.
