The Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate (PPC) draws the attention of citizens – internet users, to an attempt to deceive them, by sending blackmail emails.
In particular, as noted by the PPC, there have been recent allegations of cases of international fraud known as “sextortion scam” which manifests itself in the mass sending of e-mails to various recipients, regardless of gender and age, in order to scare and then extort money from them.
According to the PPC, in these messages there is a text in Greek with the subject: “This is a last warning! Your data is in danger! The connection was successful. ” Unknown perpetrators, using fraudulent e-mail accounts, send bulk messages, informing users that their information system has been compromised and all their data has been copied to their servers.
At the same time, they report that malware has been installed, which activates the camera and records the victim in his personal moments.
The perpetrators then report that the malware collected all of the user’s social media contacts and personal e-mail account, and blackmailed the victim into depositing a sum of money in a digital wallet in the form of a cryptocurrency. thousand euros or more, within two working days.
The PPC recommends to the recipients of the specific fraudulent messages of extortionate content the following:
– Do not respond to such emails.
– Never communicate with the blackmailers for any reason.
– Ignore the message and do not deposit money in the accounts listed.
– Do not open any attachments in emails from unknown senders.
– To immediately change any security code (password) of accounts that they consider to be at risk.
– Evaluate their computer security settings.
