Britain warns of new wave of cyber attacks following developments in Ukraine

by

The British National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) has issued a warning of a new wave of cyber-attacks with “international implications”, following Britain’s announcement of a package of sanctions against Russia.

Following Russia ‘s violation of Ukraine’ s territorial integrity, the National Cyber Security Center has called on UK agencies to be vigilant and to strengthen their cyber defenses.

The NCSC urged the agencies to follow its instructions on the steps to be taken when the cyber threat intensifies.

Although no specific threat has been reported so far, the NCSC says there has been a pattern of cyber-attacks in Ukraine with international repercussions.

Just last week, Ukrainian government websites and banks fell victim to a new massive cyber attack that Kiev did not hesitate to attribute directly to Russian hackers.

According to the Ukrainian authorities, the EU responded immediately by activating the so-called Cyber Rapid Response Team, which includes cybersecurity experts from six different Member States, namely the Netherlands, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Romania and Croatia. In fact, the mission in Kiev will be the first activity of the team abroad under the PESCO defense cooperation program.

Sanctions package in Russia from the United Kingdom

Sanctions against five Russian banks and three Russian oligarchs were announced from the floor of the House of Commons by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson.

The British Prime Minister said that President Putin’s actions are a clear violation of international law and by sending troops to Eastern Ukraine he broke the Budapest and Minsk agreements.
