The Chinese rover Yutu-2, which landed on the “dark side” of the Moon in 2019, discovered two transparent small glass spheres in the dry, gray dust of the ground. They are the first of their kind to be discovered on the lunar surface and researchers estimate that they formed relatively recently.
Glass has been rediscovered in the past by the Apollo 16 mission and samples have been returned to Earth. However, this is the first time that whole glass beads have been found. Although we do not know their exact origin, researchers estimate that they were probably created during the collision of a meteorite.
The beads are 15 and 25 mm in size. They are larger than what we find on Earth, usually in places where a meteorite has fallen. Collecting these spheres and studying their composition can help scientists understand the history of lunar collisions, as well as provide valuable information about possible building materials that we can use on the Moon’s surface.
The research was published in the Science Bulletin.
