In a pioneering experiment, two volunteers experienced ‘lucid’ dreams and exchanged a simple message, thanks to specially designed equipment
The movie “Inception” is reminiscent of a pioneering experiment by an American start-up company based in California, which proved that under certain conditions of hypnosis, people can communicate through their dreams.
In particular, volunteers who took part in the REMspace experiment, each from their bed at home, experienced “lucid” dreams and exchanged a simple message, thanks to a specially designed equipment
Lucid or lucid dreaming occurs in the REM sleep phase, when the person is aware of what they are dreaming while still “in” the dream.
The experiment and the first “conversation” ever exchanged in dreams
According to Interesting Engineering, in the experiment participants slept in their homes while a specially developed device remotely monitored their brain waves and other sleep data.
When the server detected that the first participant was beginning to experience a lucid dream, it generated a random Remmyo word—a sensor-detected dream language developed by the company’s researchers—and sent it to him through headphones.
The participant repeated the word in their dream and their response was recorded and stored on the server. The second participant began experiencing a lucid dream eight minutes later. He got the saved message which he confirmed when he woke up.
This experiment marks the first “conversation” ever exchanged in dreams.
In fact, the company announced that two other people were able to communicate with the server through their dreams.
“Yesterday, dream communication seemed like science fiction. Tomorrow, it will be so commonplace that we won’t be able to imagine our lives without this technology,” said Michael Raduga, founder and CEO of REMspace.
The “benefits” of REM dreams
The company claims that REM sleep allows people to immerse themselves in a fully developed reality where they can see, hear, touch, smell, taste, experience pleasure and pain, and even change their body and gender. .
But, unlike physical reality, REM sleep is free of restrictions and rules.
“That’s why we believe that REM sleep and related phenomena, such as lucid dreaming, will become the next big industry after artificial intelligence,” he added.
