A new study suggests aliens could be hiding 2.7 billion kilometers from Earth on Uranus’ moon Miranda
It’s one of the biggest unanswered questions in science: Is there life beyond Earth; And if so, where is it?
While you might think the answer is “too far,” surprisingly, it could be much closer to home than we thought.
A new study suggests aliens could be hiding just 2.7 billion kilometers from Earth – on Uranus’ moon Miranda.
Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Laboratory of Applied Physics have discovered evidence of an ocean beneath Miranda’s surface that they say could be habitable.
“Finding evidence of an ocean inside a small moon like Miranda is incredibly surprisingsaid Tom Nordheim, co-author of the study.
“It helps establish the story that some of these moons in the sky might be really interesting – that there might be quite a few ocean worlds around one of the most distant planets in our solar system, which is fascinating and strange.».
Based on the findings, researchers are calling for a new mission to Uranus.
“We are excited by the possibilities and look forward to returning to study Uranus and its moons in depth“, added Mr. Nordheim.
Among the 288 moons orbiting the planets in our solar system, scientists say Miranda “stands out.”
Images taken by NASA’s Voyager-2 spacecraft in 1986 showed the moon’s southern hemisphere to be a “Frankenstein-like cocoon” with a grooved surface.
In their new study, the team re-evaluated these images to understand what the interior of the moon might look like.
First, the team mapped the features of the moon’s surface, including its cracks and ridges.
They then developed a computer model to test various possible structures of the moon’s interior.
Their analysis revealed that the interior that gave the best match to the surface was a vast ocean beneath the icy surface of the moon Miranda, about 100-500 million years ago.
This ocean was no more than 30.5 kilometers below the surface and stretched for at least 99.7 kilometers.
