Meta made this decision due to concerns about the impact filters have on mental health – But maybe that’s not how the problem is solved
Meta is removing beauty filters on its platforms, Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook starting January 14th.
The decision, which will cause a headache for influencers, comes amid growing concerns about the impact filters are having on young women’s mental health, particularly when it comes to body image.
As announced, more than 2 million filters created by users on Meta’s platforms will disappear in a few days.
Beauty filters have been a key feature of it for years Instagramwith many of the most popular filters commonly used to enhance user appearance, created by users through Meta’s Spark Studio.
However, they will not completely disappear from the platform. Meta’s first-party filters will still be available, but the filters will be removed third party manufacturers it will mean the end of many advanced and realistic beauty enhancement filters.
Research shows that 87% of Instagram beauty filters they make noses smaller of users, while 90% lips swell.
Newer filters, like TikTok’s “Bold Glamour,” take advantage of it AI technology to combine users’ faces with beauty enhancements, creating hyperrealistic and unattainable standards of beauty.
Experts say Meta’s decision to eliminate third-party AR filters may not fully resolve concerns around mental health and body image issues, as users may simply find other ways to access similar technologies, making the problem even more difficult to control.
