The two countries are giving a new impetus to the cooperation of Greece and Cyprus in the field of digital transformation, as confirmed at the meeting of Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou and the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of Cyprus, Nikodimos Damianou.

The meeting, held in Athens, focused on interconnecting the two countries’ digital wallets, gov.gr Wallet and “digital citizen”, as well as broader initiatives for the digital transition of public services. Based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed in June 2024, the interconnection of digital wallets is expected to greatly facilitate the movements and activities of citizens and businesses between the two countries.

The new system will allow for digital documents, such as identities, driving diplomas and other critical documents, without the need for physical presence or additional bureaucratic procedures.

According to both sides, Greece-Cyprus cooperation is now a model of cooperation in the field of digital transformation, showing the way for similar partnerships at European level.

Mr Papastergiou described the interoperability of the “critical step” wallets and stressed that the citizens of the two countries would benefit immediately. “Documents without visits to embassies or other services will facilitate businesses and citizens, confirming that Greece and Cyprus are jointly moving to digital transition”, stated characteristically.

Cyprus: A digital partner

Mr Nicodemus Damianou, for his part, said that cooperation is of strategic importance. “As we are used to saying, we are a nation, two states and we can have a common digital course. The interface of applications is only the beginning ”, He emphasized, stressing the intention of the two countries to lead Europe in digital interoperability.

The “Digital Citizen” application, developed on the standards of Gov.gr Wallet, is already successfully operating in Cyprus. With the complete interface, the documents, stored in any of the two wallets, will be automatically accepted by the authorities of both states.

New digital works

The meeting also discussed the exchange of optimal practices and the implementation of joint projects, such as digital governance, smart cities and cyber security. Mr Papastergiou stressed that Greece has a valuable experience, which is ready to share with Cyprus, and both sides have pledged to intensify their cooperation.

The two countries aspire to star in the European digital scene, with the interoperability of wallets being the first step. “Europe needs such synergies to accelerate its digital transition”noted Mr. Damianou.
