The three -country digital ministers are coordinated on the proposal in view of the meeting with their European counterparts on June 6
France, Spain and Greece are pushing for compulsory age restrictions for users social networksincluding the Facebook of Meta Platforms and X (formerly twitter) by Ilon Musk, according to a document seen by Bloomberg.
The ministers of digital services of the three countries are coordinated on the proposal in view of a meeting with their European counterparts on June 6, according to the document.
The new rules will make it mandatory to integrate age verification technology into any device that has internet access.
‘We need to protect our children’French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday during an interview on French television. “It has been shown that social networks are clearly part of the cause of pain and mental health problems”.
According to the agency, governments around the world are trying to impose limitations on social media companies in the midst of growing data that proves that they can harm the mental health especially of young people. It is recalled that Australia approved a 16 -year -old threshold last year for social media users, which is expected to enter into force in December.
However, the “lack of appropriate and widely used age verification mechanisms” means that these limits are difficult to impose in practice, the three countries say according to the report.
Such a move is likely to confront them with the Donald Trump government. The president has entered into a close alliance with billionaires in the technology industry, such as Musk and Meta Managing Director Mark Zuckerberg, as they are fighting against the stricter regulatory rules in the EU.
The Commission and some EU Member States are already working on pilot programs to enhance parental control and age verification, but the differences between regulations in EU Member States and easy access to social networks outside the block make their efforts difficult.
The proposal also speaks of restrictions on “addictive” features, such as pop -up windows, personalized content or automatically reproduced videos.
“A true identity for every social network user – this is the only way to really guarantee that minors will not have access to inappropriate content,” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said in a speech in February at the World Economic Forum in Davos,
