An impressive and revolutionary discovery on the surface of the planet Mars – proves that the red planet once had a much wider climate than it was believed – scientists did.
Researchers found traces from 16,000 kilometers of ancient rivers In the southern highlands of Mars, in the area Noachis terraan area full of craters where many believed that “there was no information on the existence of water”.
Ancient water currents are believed to be over 3 billion years old and were captured in high -end images in orbit around Mars.
While some of the riverbeds are relatively small, others form networks that extend to many kilometers.
“There has been water on Mars countless times in the past, but what is really interesting here is that this is an area where we have long believed that there was no evidence of water,” said Adam Lozut, a doctoral student at the Guardian.
These ancient rivers would probably be filled by regular rains or snowfall In the area, the researchers said.
These findings support the idea that Mars might have had habitable conditions billions of years ago.
Lozukut and his team studied high -resolution Noachis Terra images by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) and Mars Global Surveyor.
The images covered nearly 10 million square kilometers, extending larger than Australia.
The images have revealed a multitude of geological features called Helicic Vein Fluvial Sinuous Ridges, also known as inverted channels.
These are formed when the deposits of sediments carrying an ancient river harden with time and are later revealed, as the surrounding surface is eroded.
