European Commission President Ursula von der Lien, at a joint press conference with Ukraine President Volodimir Zelenski, presented his key positions on Ukraine from Brussels, in view of tomorrow’s meeting with the White House.

The points he emphasized are: strong security guarantees for Ukraine, safeguarding the country’s territorial sovereignty, and the absence of restrictions on Ukrainian Armed Forces in terms of their cooperation with third countries.

“International border cannot change with violence,” he said.

The leader of the Commission stressed that the European Union would support Ukraine “for as long as it needs” against the Russian invasion.

European Commission President Ursula von der Laien said that peace “must be achieved through power”, presenting the framework that, according to him, must have an agreement.

As he said, the agreement must first of all include security guarantees to protect both Ukraine and Europe.

At the same time, he stressed that Ukraine must be able to safeguard its territorial sovereignty, and there can be no restrictions on its armed forces – neither in its integration into international organizations nor in providing assistance from other countries.

“There can be no restrictions on the Ukrainian Armed Forces, whether it is cooperation with third countries or help from third countries. No restrictive line for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, “he said in view of the meeting of European leaders and Monday’s summit in Washington, where a possible peace plan between Ukraine and Russia will be discussed.

She added: “As I have often said, Ukraine must become a steel hedgehog, inaccessible to any possible invader.”

Ursula von der Laien said that the debate on the term “ceasefire” is secondary to the essence, which is to stop the bloodshed in Ukraine.

“What matters is the result. And the result must be to stop death, “he said, speaking to reporters.

Von der Layen also emphasized that “it is not the term that matters, but the content” and added that it is vital to have a trilateral meeting as soon as possible “between the president of Ukraine, the President of the United States and the President of Russia”.

Zelenski: Ukraine Constitution does not allow for territories

For his part, Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski stressed from Brussels that the Ukrainian Constitution allows no territories.

“Putin has many demands, but we don’t know them all. It will take time to look at them if they are as many as it sounds, “he said, stressing that this cannot be done now, under the pressure of the battles. For this reason, he noted, a ceasefire is required to have “real negotiations” that will begin with the current line of the front.

Zelenski reiterated that the issue of territorial integrity can only be discussed at a trilateral summit between Ukraine and Russia leaders.

At the same time, he emphasized the importance of agreeing the United States to provide security guarantees to Ukraine, along with Europe. “We need a security that works in practice such as Article 5 of NATO,” he said, referring to the principle of the alliance’s collective defense.

Europe can finance security guarantees

The press conference was asked by Volodimir Zelenski to clarify what kind of security guarantees he would find appropriate and if he was afraid of repetition of the tension at the Oval Office during his visit in February.

The Ukrainian president replied that he realizes that funding for security guarantees could only come from Europe, but stressed that there are still things the United States can offer.

At the same time, he stressed that Ukraine also needs a clear guarantee that Russia will not continue to own the territories of the neighboring country.

As for his journey to the White House, he expressed hope that he would prove to be productive.
