A team of scientists composed technically by one of the most creepy phenomena in the history of the planet: the reversal of the Earth’s poles that occurred about 780,000 years ago. This is the phenomenon known as ‘Matuyama-Brunhes’ in which the magnetic poles of the planet change seats

The team that includes Geophysics from the HELMHOLTZ Geophysics Center (GFZ), led by Sania Panovska and Ahmed Nasser Mahgub, created a model of the Earth’s magnetic field, at that time, based on ancient magnetic traces.

The model was visualized by Maximilian Artus Shaner and was transformed into sound by collaboration with Claus Nielsen.

In this file, a strange, almost scary sound is imprinted.

The Earth’s magnetic field is created by liquid metals inside the planet and extends hundreds of kilometers in space, protecting us from harmful solar and cosmic radiation.

During the reversals of the poles, such as the particular, the field is weakened, leaving more radiation to reach the earth.

The analysis of the data shows that these reversals do not often occur. The poles are moving slowly, uncoordinated and this reversal is considered- without being confirmed- that it lasted up to 22,000 years.

It is believed that the phenomenon influenced life on earth then – but also Homo erectus. Magnetic turmoil has also been linked to climate changes, although their exact effects, at that time, remain unknown due to limited historical data.

The sound performance of this reversal is a creepy reminder of how dynamic and unpredictable our planet is – and how little we still know how the powers of nature affect life on Earth.
