American scientists have managed to create human embryos, using DNA from skin cells which they fertilized with sperm.
This new technique can be the “key” of infertility due to age aging or diseases, as it uses almost any body cell as a starting point for life.
In addition, it could “pave the way” so that homosexual couples would have a genetic relative.
Indicatively, it could help older women without sustainable eggs, men with low sperm production, or patients who have infertility after cancer treatment.
In addition, as the technique allows the use of men’s skin cells, paving the way for homosexual couples to have children who will have genetic material from both parents.
This method, which is still at an early stage and requires significant additional studies, improvements and possibly up to ten years of further research before being performed in fertility clinics, is considered by experts as important scientific progress
During the study, published in the journal Nature Communications, 82 functional eggs were created, which fertilized and developed the early stages of fetal, but without going beyond the sixth day of development.
Professor Shoukhrat Mitalipov, director of the Fetal Cell and gene therapy Center at Oregon Health and Science University, said the team had achieved something that was considered impossible but acknowledged that improvements were needed.
In any case, experts such as Professor Roger Sturmey of the University of HAL emphasize the importance of transparency and public debate on new progress in reproductive technology, while Professor Richard Anderson of the University of Edinburgh characterizes the possibility of creating new ones.
