Facebook: Accounts of Ukrainian soldiers in the “target” of Russian and Belarusian hackers

by

The accounts of Ukrainian soldiers on Facebook were targeted by hackers, according to Meta.

According to Cnn, the parent company Facebook, Meta on Thursday exposed a series of illegal cyber-tactics that it says use groups linked to Russia and Belarus to target Ukrainian soldiers and civilians.

The tactics used by these groups include presenting themselves as journalists and independent news agencies on the Internet in an attempt to promote Russian propagandadistorting facts and hacking into dozens of Ukrainian soldiers’s accounts Facebook.

At the same time, they are conducting coordinated campaigns to remove posts by Russian critics from social media.

As pointed out by Meta in particular, a group of hackers known as “Ghostwriter“, which cyber experts believe is connected to Belarus, tried to hack the Facebook accounts of dozens of Ukrainian soldiers.

These attacks were successful in some cases as it became possible to upload videos calling on the military to surrender as if these posts were from legitimate account holders.

“We have blocked the sharing of these videos,” the company said

Meta also noted that the activities of hacker groups linked to the Russian and Belarusian governments appeared to be intensifying shortly before the invasion, adding that it was observed that accounts linked to the Belarusian KGB surrendered without a fight and the country’s politicians leave it on February 24, the day Russia started the war.
