US: Republicans in Congress hail Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter

by

Republicans in Congress welcomed the news of her acquisition of Twitter by billionaire Elon Musk, while Democrats criticized it as a sign that members of Congress should move fast to contain the big tech companies.

Musk, owner of Tesla and SpaceX, closed the acquisition agreement yesterday $ 44 billion (EUR 40.98 billion).

Republican MP Jim Jordan, a member of the conservative Freedom Caucus group in House of Representativeswelcomed the news via a Twitter post, stating: “Freedom of speech returns.”

Jordan and other Republicans have criticized Twitter for banning former President Donald Trump and other key Conservative members from joining the alleged social networking platform. Trump was denied access because of the risk of escalating violence after invading the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

However, Trump said yesterday that he will not return to Twitter even if his account is restored, while he will remain on his own social media platform.

Senator Marsa Blackburn, another Republican, said: “I hope that Elon Musk will help control the history of the big tech companies regarding censorship against users who have a different view.”

However, Democrat Elizabeth Warren, a progressive senator who criticizes technology platforms, called the deal “dangerous to our democracy.”

“Billionaires like Elon Mack are playing with a different set of rules than anyone else, gathering strength for their personal gain. We need a wealth tax and strong rules to hold big tech companies accountable. ” mentioned in a post on Twitter.

Democrat Ro Cana said the deal was a reason for the passage of a bill to protect the personal data of people who use the internet.

“We need safeguards that give users more control over their personal data while ensuring impartiality and transparency”said in a statement the same MP.

Republicans are a minority in the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives.
