Scientific research with psychedelics will be present in panels at the Rio2C conference, which starts this Wednesday (27th) and runs until Sunday (1st) in Rio de Janeiro, in a face-to-face format.
The first of these tables at the event will be “Psychedelic Science, Cognition and Mental Health”, on Friday (29), at Brainspace, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.
The discussion will take place around the historical use of substances to alter the state of consciousness and the most recent psychedelic renaissance, with the use of these drugs in studies for the treatment of mental illnesses.
These drugs, which include psilocybin, ayahuasca, LSD, among others, have been researched for application against a number of problems that affect mental health, such as depression, post-traumatic stress, chemical dependency, grief and even in palliative care.
The study of these substances began in the middle of the last century, but ended up stalling around the 1960s and 1970s, as these drugs became popular due to their association with political contestation.
The debate will be attended by Fernanda Palhano, researcher at UFRN (Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte), by Lucas Maia, researcher and guest professor at Unifesp (Federal University of São Paulo) and Unicamp (State University of Campinas), and by Luís Fernando Tófoli, psychiatrist and scientist at Unicamp. Moderation will be done by Marcelo Leite, columnist for Sheet and author of the blog Virada Psicodélica.
The next day, Saturday (30), the roles are reversed. Leite will present his book “Psychonauts – Travels with Brazilian Psychedelic Science”, released last year by Fósforo. Then, the columnist will be interviewed by Palhano, Maia and Tófoli, who will mediate.
The activity, which will also take place in the Brainspace space, runs from 11 am to 12 pm.
In the work, the journalist explores studies and presents scientists and patients who participated in drug research. In addition, he narrates his own experiences with psychedelics.
By the way, at least part of the curatorship of the room where the events will take place was the responsibility of neuroscientist Stevens Rehen, a professor at UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) and researcher at the D’Or Institute, who is also dedicated to the study of psychedelics.
In Brainspace, topics such as creativity, meditation in everyday life and the relationship of cannabisscience and medicine.
