The Russian-appointed mayor of the Ukrainian city of Enerkhodarlocated next to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, was injured in an explosion todayas reported by a Ukrainian official and a Russian news agency.
Andrei Shevtsik was appointed mayor after the city was occupied by Russian forces. According to the Russian agency RIA, is being treated in the intensive care unitafter the explosion.
“We have accurate information that since the explosion, the self-proclaimed head of the ‘people’s administration’ Shevchik and his bodyguards were injured,” said Dmitry Orlov, the pre-war Ukrainian mayor of the city.
According to Orloff’s post in the Telegram, Sevchik has been transferred to the Russian-occupied Melitopolis and will be temporarily replaced as head of the local government.
Reuters was unable to determine the cause of the explosion.
Before the war, Enerhondar had a population of over 50,000. Many worked at the two nearby power plants – one of which is Zaporizhia, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.
Last week, Ukraine announced that it had blown up an armored train carrying Russian troops to Melitopol.
