A man was shot dead on Sunday morning in a New York subway car in Manhattan, according to police.
The victim, who has not been identified, was shot in the chest around 11:40 am on a Q train that was stopped at Canal Street station. Authorities did not provide further information on what may have happened in the car.
According to firefighters, two people were taken to hospital – their condition is not yet known. The gunman fled to street level after the attack and is still wanted by police.
The case comes just under six weeks after another subway shooting in the Brooklyn area left at least 23 wounded. The author was arrested and charged with terrorism, and the episode reinforced the perception that New York’s public transport system is unsafe.
On social media on Sunday, passengers said they saw and heard gunshots being fired and people running out of the train.
Metro administration redirected two-line trains while police investigated the case.
