I was forced to sign false confessions in the presence of the British government to leave Iran, says Nazanin Zagari-Ratcliffe

Iranian-British Nazanin Zagari-Ratcliffe said she had to sign “false confessions” in the presence of a British government spokeswoman before returning to Britain in March, following years of detention in Iran.

“I was taken to the airport by the Revolutionary Guards. I did not see my parents. Instead, I was forced to sign confessions in the presence of the British government.”said Zagari-Ratcliffe in an interview that will be broadcast tonight by the BBC.

“I was told I could not get on the plane. I was told they had received money”, a debt of almost 400 400 million owed to London for a long time. “So what’s the point of having me sign a piece of paper that is not right? These are false confessions,” he added.

Zagari-Ratcliffe, who has dual nationality, clarified that a British official was present at the time of the signing, which was videotaped.

These confessions are “the propaganda of the Iranian regime to show how scary they are and how they can do whatever they want.” he added, referring to an “inhuman” experience.

Zagari-Ratcliffe, who returned to Britain in mid-March after six years in prison in Iran, is specifically accused of plotting to overthrow the Islamic Republic, something the Thomson Reuters employee has always denied.

He was released along with another dual national, Anousheh Assuri, following London’s settlement of a 39 394m (almost € 464m) debt owed to Iran.

“Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was horribly tested by Iran until she left the country.” A spokesman for the British government said in a statement that it had worked hard to stop her unjust detention.

The spokesman called on Tehran to release all British and other foreigners still being held in the country.

Nazanin Zagari-Ratcliffe and her husband had met with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on May 13 to discuss the “mistakes” made by London during her detention, saying she could be released. Much earlier.

In late 2017, Prime Minister Boris Johnson, then head of British diplomacy, made a big mistake by saying that Zagari was training journalists – something she herself denied in Iran – – providing arguments to Tehran to keep her in custody.
