Eleven people were killed this morning during a police operation in the favela Villa Cruzeiroin the northern part of Rio de Janeiro, the military police announced, referring to ten “suspected criminals” and a resident who fell dead from a stray bullet.
The military policewhich often carries out such morning operations in Rio’s anti-drug traffickers, said law enforcement forces came under fire when launching an operation to “locate and apprehend criminals”.

Among the suspects wanted are “gang leaders hiding in the favela”, some of them came “from other parts of Brazil”, especially from the northeast.
Today is the deadliest raid in Rio in a year. In May 2021, a police operation in the Zakarezino favela killed 28 people, including a police officer, the heaviest in the city’s history.
According to the G1 news website, today’s operation targeted “Comando Vermelho”, one of the main criminal factions in the country.
Police said shots were fired at the top of Villa Cruzeiro, “including the forest” that covers part of the hill.
During the operation, seven assault rifles, five pistols, ten motorcycles and six cars were seized.
