Commission: Closes “windows” used by Russian oligarchs to avoid sanctions

by

The EU is “closing the windows” to the Russian oligarchs. The Commission proposed on Wednesday new rules that will make it more difficult for Russian oligarchs to avoid sanctions, paving the way for the confiscation of yachts and their villas. The money from the seizures will be used to rebuild Ukraine.

“While Russian aggression in Ukraine is ongoing, it is of the utmost importance that the EU restrictive measures be fully implemented and that breach of these measures should not be allowed to pay off,” the European Commission said in a statement.

“Today’s proposals “They aim to ensure that the assets of individuals and entities violating the restrictive measures can be effectively confiscated in the future.”

Financial sanctions are imposed very differently between the bloc’s 27 member states, in a regulatory “patchwork” that often allows those targeted to avoid the consequences.

“Violation of EU sanctions it is a serious crime and must have serious consequences. “We need rules across the EU to implement this,” said EU Commission Vice-President Vera Jurova.

The Vice – President of the Commission characteristically stated that the sanctions depend on 40 different legal regimes.
