Measures for protection of Hagia Sophia announced that they will receive Turkish authorities, after them continuous vandalism in the temple – a symbol of orthodoxy which has been turned into a mosque.
They came to light recently images of shame from the historic monument as visitors they scratched the walls to get pieces for charms and souvenirs, others carved the imperial gate, others caused damage to other parts of the temple while they literally left their shoes “wherever they are”.
With a long delay, Ankara decided to mobilize another 70 guards for the protection of the monument that will be added to the tourist police that already exists in Hagia Sophia.
As explained by SKAI correspondent in Turkey, Manolis Kostidis, while Hagia Sophia functioned as a museum, eabout 17,000 people a day were controlled inside the temple. Today this number has reached 40,000 and 45,000 and the entrance is uncontrollable.
On Sunday, however, a new fiesta will be held in Hagia Sophia with the participation of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan for the Fall of Istanbul.
