Italy: Writer Boris Pahor has died at the age of 108

The great writer died at the age of 108intellectual and survivor of Nazi concentration camps Boris Pahorwho was born in Trieste but wrote in his own language, Slovenian, as he fought for its recognition.

Born in Trieste in 1913, Pahor is considered the most important Slovenian writer with Italian citizenship and one of the most important voices against the Nazi camps concentration – the subject of Necropola’s book, in which he narrates his experience in them.

Pahor also wrote about the discrimination against the Slovenian minority in Trieste by the fascist regime.

He had written about 30 bookswhich have been translated into dozens of languages– including “Forbidden Speech” (in Greek by Metaichmio).

Necropola was first published in Slovenian in Italy in 1967 and released in Italian only in 2007.

In addition to his literary work, Pahor was known for his social contribution and involvement in politics.

He was the holder of the Preseren Prize, the highest award for cultural achievement in Slovenia, and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature by the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

In 2013, when he turned 100, he was awarded by the European Parliament, in a special ceremony in Slovenia.
