Losses of low-ranking Russian officers in Ukraine ‘overwhelming’, London says

According to the British Ministry of Defense, the losses of the middle and low-ranking officers that Russia has suffered in Ukraine are “overwhelming”.

It is noted that brigade and battalion commanders are deployed in advanced positions of danger because they are given too high a level of responsibility for the performance of their units.

Similarly, low-ranking officers have been forced to lead regular low-level operations, as the Russian military does not have highly trained and qualified officers who have been promoted from the bases of the army, who play a similar role in Western armies.

The British ministry’s observation is that the loss of a large percentage of the younger generation of professional officers is likely to exacerbate existing problems in modernizing Russia’s approach to administration and control.

In the short term, the regular battle groups reconstituted in Ukraine by survivors of multiple Russian units are likely to be less effective due to the lack of low-level leaders.

The report from the British Ministry of Defense concludes that “with multiple credible reports of on-the-spot insurgency between Russian forces in Ukraine, the lack of experienced and reliable squadron and battalion commanders is likely to lead to further collapse.”
