Like today 81 years ago, about a month after the Nazi invasion of Greece, one of the most heroic acts of resistance against the occupiers takes place.
That night of the 30th to the 31st of May o Manolis Glezos and Lakis Santas climb the Sacred Rock of the Acropolis and submit the flag with the swastika that waved in previous weeks.
The announcement in the censored newspapers by the German guard said: “On the night of May 31, the German war flag was hoisted over the Acropolis in the presence of unknown perpetrators. Strict interrogations are carried out. “Those guilty and their accomplices will be punished with the death penalty.”
Fortunately, the “culprits” were never arrested. But their names went down in history and their deed was a symbol of heroism and resistance.
On the occasion of the completion of 81 years since that night, when the Nazi swastika descended from the most emblematic point of Greece, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias wrote on his twitter account: “The lowering of the flag of Nazi Germany on the Acropolis by M. Glezo – L. Santa was one of the first and most emblematic acts of resistance “.
