Partygate: Government adviser on ethics demands explanations from Boris Johnson

The independent British government’s ethics adviser, Lord Gate, has asked Prime Minister Boris Johnson to explain why he considers the police party fine for the partygate not a breach of the ministerial code.

Violation of this code of conduct by members of the government is considered reason for resignation in Britain.

Lord Gate commented that it was a “legitimate question” whether the Prime Minister had violated the code. “Perhaps the Prime Minister considers that no such violation of his ministerial code has been committed. “In this case, I believe that a prime minister should respond appropriately, explaining his arguments publicly,” the government ministerial adviser wrote in a letter.

In a reply letter to Lord Gait Boris Johnson notes that “there was no intention of violating the regulations”. It is recalled that the fine was imposed by the Metropolitan Police for the presence of Boris Johnson at the surprise mini-party for his birthday in the cabinet in June 2020, amid a lockdown.

“I did not consider that the conditions under which I received the fine were contrary to the regulations. Here accepted the outcome and I paid according to the legal requirements. “Paying a fine is not a criminal offense,” Johnson said in his letter.

Lord Gate also revealed that he had repeatedly instructed the Prime Minister to explain publicly why he considered the fine not a breach of the ministerial code. “This advice has not been heeded,” said the government adviser.

Labor leader Angela Reiner described the criticism by the government’s ethics adviser as “another sign of rampant corruption in Downing Street”.

Lord Gate’s intervention intensifies I look forward to the pressure on Boris Johnson, who has been publicly criticized by more than 40 Conservative MPs for the parygate. 28 of them have demanded his immediate resignation, with most having submitted a letter of no confidence to the competent party body.

The collection of 54 letters provoked a vote for the possible removal of the Prime Minister. The Daily Express reports that a top Brexiteer and Mr Johnson’s ally has also filed a letter of no confidence without announcing it.
