The Prime Minister of Sweden Magdalena Anderson said on Wednesday that Stockholm would continue dialogue with Turkey over Ankara’s objections to the Scandinavian application for NATO membership.
“I look forward to constructive “Meetings with Turkey in the near future,” he told a joint news conference with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
“Our answers to requests and also questions from Turkey will be given directly to Turkey and we will also resolve any issues and misunderstandings that may exist,” said the Swedish Prime Minister.
Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership last month, but their candidacies met with unexpected objections from Ankara, which accuses the two Nordic countries of offering safe havens to Kurdish fighters. Turkey is also calling on the two countries to lift the arms embargo on Turkey.
Addressing the parliamentary group of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), Tayyip Erdogan noted that Turkey wants to see a “sincere” approach from the two Nordic countries regarding her concerns and added that Ankara will not change its mind unless it sees concrete and binding steps being taken.
