At least one person has been killed and six others injured in a magnitude 6.1 earthquake and aftershock in southwest China’s Sichuan Province, state television said on Monday.
The quake, measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale, struck at 17.00 local time (12.00 Greek time) in the Lushan region, about 100 kilometers west of the regional capital Chengdu, according to the China Seismological Network (CENC).
A magnitude 4.5 earthquake three minutes later shook the area around neighboring Baosing, according to CENC.
The first casualty toll was “one dead, one seriously injured and five slightly injured,” state television CCTV reported.

Hundreds of doctors, firefighters, soldiers, rescue workers and police have been deployed “for search and rescue operations, to provide assistance to the injured, to open roads and to evacuate residents to a safe place,” the network said.
Buildings were damaged but authorities are not yet aware of any reports of a building collapsing, according to Sichuan firefighters.
The quake affected many cities in the province, including Chengdu, according to Weibo users.

The US Geological Survey estimated the magnitude of the quake at 5.9.
Sichuan, a mountainous region known all over the world for its shelters for giants, is hit several times a month by earthquakes of various magnitudes.
Last September, three people were killed in an earthquake in the province and at least 10,000 were forced to flee their homes.
In May 2008, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake shook Sichuan province, leaving 87,000 dead or missing.
