Record storms in southern Mexico caused flooding and mudslides that killed 11 people.

About 20 people are still missing after Agatha became the strongest hurricane to hit the coast in May.

The Governor of Southern Oaxaca said yesterday that the river crossed the embankment and brought people home, with other victims buried in mud and stones.

Governor Alejandd Murat told local media that “there were basically two reasons.”

“On the other hand, there was an overflowing river, and the most serious thing was the landslide.”

Murat said most of the deaths occurred in a small mountain town off the coast.

But he added that there was also information that three children had disappeared near the Huatulko resort.

Murat added that electricity was restored to some settlements near the coast, but bridges were washed away and some roads were blocked by floodwaters.

A few kilometers from the coast, San Isidro del Palmar was hit by the Tonameka River, which runs through the city.

The first hurricane of the Eastern Pacific hurricane season, Agatha, made landfall Monday afternoon, pummeling the sparsely populated coastal towns and fishing villages of Oaxaca.

It lost power as soon as it moved into the mountains, but there were strong Category 2 storms with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph.

The remnants of the storm moved northeast of Veracruz yesterday and only formed on Sunday.

Jeff Masters, a meteorologist at Yale Climate Connections and founder of Weather Underground, identified the strongest storm to hit the Eastern Pacific in May.

It’s unclear whether climate change has played a role in breaking hurricane records.
