Nazi-era rhetoric from Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman – Approval of 100 billion-euro package for armaments programs shakes Moscow

The German Foreign Ministry today criticized Germany’s plan to strengthen its armyconsidering that this is equivalent to “re-militarization” which refers to the Nazi period (1933-45).

In late May, the German government and conservative opposition reached an agreement to amend fiscal rules and release € 100 billion to modernize the armed forces in the face of the Russian threat.

“We consider it an additional confirmation that Berlin has taken the path of a new militarization. We know very well how this could end “said the representative of Foreign Minister Maria Zakharova.

This statement seems to refer to the rearmament of Germany by the Nazis in the 1930s and the ensuing World War II started by Adolf Hitler.

The € 100 billion release for the German military marks a major turning point in German policy, which in recent years has not complied with its NATO commitments, a move that has angered the United States.

After the end of the Cold War, Germany reduced its army from 500,000 men in 1990, at the time of reunification, to about 200,000 today. Army officials also often complained about damage to fighter jets, warships or tanks.
