Through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, 500 Ukrainian patients in need of ongoing emergency medical care or assistance have so far transferred from Ukraine, Moldova and neighboring EU Member States in European hospitals. The main host countries are currently Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania and Sweden.
The Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Mrs. Stella Kyriakidou “More than 500 Ukrainian patients in need of treatment and care have now been transferred to EU hospitals, thanks to the EU solidarity mechanisms and the generosity of 13 EEA Member States and partners. This is true European solidarity in practice. The EU has mobilized an unprecedented scale and speed of assistance to support and protect Ukraine and its people. “Ukraine can continue to rely on the EU’s unwavering support.”
The Commissioner for Crisis Management, Mr. Janes Lenarcic He added: “As hospitals in Ukraine and neighboring countries are under increasing pressure, we need to provide specialized treatments for both the chronically ill and the wounded during the war. The EU works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to coordinate the medical transfers of Ukrainian patients through the Civil Protection Mechanism. As we now reach the milestone of the 500 Ukrainian patients who have been transported to hospitals across Europe, I would like to thank all the countries that have provided beds for these patients to receive the urgently needed care. Once again, the EU is proving its support for the most vulnerable. “Together we save lives.”
Patients are transported through the Solidarity Mechanism, a specific European system for medical transport under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, which ensures the safe transmission of patient data through the exchange of medical records through the Early Warning and Response System. This mechanism also allows the Commission to inform the Ukrainian authorities of where patients have been transferred to EU or EEA countries. More information is available here.
