In May, Moscow decided to stop supplying Gazprom Germania, Gazprom’s former subsidiary in Germany, after Berlin placed it under special management due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Russia’s sanctions against Gazprom Germania and its subsidiaries will cost German taxpayers and gas consumers about five billion euros, as the quantities will need to be replaced, the Welt am Sonntag newspaper reports in its current issue, citing industry representatives.

Since then, the Bundesnetzagentur, the energy regulator that took over the management of the company, has been forced to buy gas on the market in order to meet contractual obligations for the supply of municipal bodies and regional suppliers.

Welt am Sonntag reports that the Minister of Economy, Robert Hubeck, estimates that an additional 10 million cubic meters per day are required, with their cost reaching 3.5 billion euros annually. The further costs come from completing the Riden gas storage facility ordered by Mr Habeck on Wednesday, the report said.

According to the report, the additional costs will be covered by providers and consumers with a special fee from October.

The German Economy Ministry declined to comment on the costs, Welt reported. There was no response from the ministry when Reuters asked him to comment on the e-mail.
