Britain: Recommended via email to a member of parliament who was breastfeeding her baby in parliament

by

A member of parliament in Britain has been recommended for appearing in the House of Commons with her three-month-old son, whom she is breastfeeding, reopening the debate today on the rights of MPs becoming parents.

Labor MP Stella Krizi was informed that the regulations do not allow anyone to bring their child to a session of parliament, something she did yesterday.

Krizi replied that “I did not know that” since she had previously attended meetings with a baby and asked for a review of the measure.

According to Krizi to the BBC, she regularly took her son, who is breastfeeding, and before that her daughter in the House of Representatives.

Krizi, who encourages mothers to get involved in politics through a campaign called “This Mom Votes”, posted the email on her Twitter account with the remark sent to her and commented: “Mothers to the mother of all parliaments they are not visible nor do they hear them it seems … “.

The Rules of Procedure, issued by the President and Vice-Presidents of the House and concerning the House of Commons and the Westminster Hall, were updated in September.

While MPs are entitled to six months’ paid maternity leave and a proxy vote, some argue that it is difficult to secure funding for a suitable replacement.

In addition, Members are required to be present in Westminster in order to represent, for example, the seats of their constituents in Parliament.

Former Liberal Democrat MP Joe Swinson is said to be the first lawmaker to attend a House of Commons meeting with her baby in a backpack in 2018.

That same year, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinta Arden became the first head of state to appear with her baby at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
