Last month, an ambulance dispatcher involved in a mass shooting was booked and released from a tops supermarket in Buffalo, New York.
The 911 dispatcher, who had worked at the Erie County Central Police Station for eight years, was on leave May 16 for “investigating a mishandled phone.”
The hearing, held May 30, “stops getting completely inappropriate and out-of-protocol 911 calls,” said Mark Poloncar, executive director of the District of the Nation.
Authorities mistakenly did not name the woman who received the call, but the Buffalo News reported that they found her. Her name is Ayers.
On the day of the shooting, Ayers, 54, was responding to a 911 call posted by Lattisharogers, an assistant office manager for Buffalo Tops Friendly Markets, when an 18-year-old gunman entered the store and opened fire. Gunmen, who said they were motivated by racist hatred, shot and killed 13 people, killing 10 of them, authorities said. The 10 people killed were all black.
Rogers, 33, said he was quietly seeking help.
“I called 911 and I heard it nearby so I whispered,” Rogers told WGRZ.
“And when I whispered to 911 on the phone, the coordinator started yelling at me, ‘Why are you whispering? There’s no need to whisper.’ And I’m like, ‘Wife.’ She’s in the store. He shoots. He’s an active shooter.” “I am scared for my life,” he said.
She then made a second call with her boyfriend. She asked him to call 911 to report the shooting to authorities and hopefully the shooting would end.
He said something weird to me and then he looked at me. And I had to call my boyfriend to call 911,” Rogers added.
The 911 dispatcher was released the same day the shooter was acquitted of domestic terrorism and other hate-motivated charges. Immediately after the attack, he was charged with murder.
