At the home of a celebrity Animal Survival Association, dozens of dead dogs and cats were found dumped in her home.

Police found the bodies of 28 dogs and two cats in the cage of Caroline Down Pennington, CEO and director of the nonprofit animal rescue group GROWL.

Investigators conducted a wellness test at her home in Columbia, South Carolina, on May 22 after her neighbors noticed the “smell of death.” Richland Sheriff Leon Rodt called the scene “shocking” and “painful.”

“This is the man who was instructed by society to take care of these animals and find a home for them,” Lot said. He betrayed this trust and the trust of these innocent animals who depended on him.

According to the New York Post, a sheriff’s spokesperson believes the dog and cat were alone for nine months before dying in their cages.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the animals have died of starvation and dehydration, are in a serious state of putrefaction and may be burning with their droppings.

Pennington, 47, who was also an employee of the Kershaw County Humane Society, was arrested Friday when a dead animal was found. He has been charged with animal cruelty under section 30.

The Humane Society said Pennington no longer worked for them.

“We were not aware of the behavior of our former employees, and we are truly shocked and distressed,” the Humane Society said. “Our dedicated staff continues our mission to care for the lost homeless pets in Kershaw County.”

Pennington is also being investigated for his possible involvement in the GROWL fraud involving 501(c)3 registered non-profit organizations. The sheriff’s office asks you to talk to people who have donated to the organization in the last year.
