A new ship has been discovered off the coast of Colombia, a ship that potentially lost billions of dollars in treasure.

The Navy was carrying out an underwater surveillance mission in the Galeón San José, but the president explained that on Monday he had found two more historic vessels in the vicinity.

Some historians believe that San José hoards treasures. The new image features gold coins, vases and pottery.

The ship, which sank in 2015, sank near the Caribbean port of Cartagena in 1708, sparking years of legal wrangling over whether the cargo could be recovered.

The remote-controlled car reached 900 meters from the surface and captured the best views of the treasure, including gold bars, cannons made in Seville in 1655 and an unchanging Chinese dinner.

Authorities say Navy and government archaeologists are working to determine the plaque’s origin based on the inscription.

The car also found two other pieces of debris nearby, the Colonial Boat and the Schuner. These were probably at the same time as the Spanish Revolutionary War about 200 years ago. It was not immediately clear what the ship was carrying when it crashed.

Admiral Gabriel Pérez, commander of the Navy, said: “Currently, there are two finds on the same side that indicate other options for the archaeological excavation.”

“That’s why the work starts now.”

The local government aims to display the sunken ship in the museum under the sink.

To confirm the new discovery, President Ivan Duke said of the original ship:

“In this way we preserve the heritage that is the treasure of San José Galeón.”
