Six people, including five teenagers between the ages of 17 and 18, have been killed by gunfire in central Mexico, local authorities said on Tuesday.

“I am saddened to announce that six people have been killed,” said Cesar Prieto, the mayor of Salamanca, Guanajuato, where the attack took place Monday night near a school.

The motive was not clear.

The state of Guanajuato is a key hub for Mexico’s oil industry. It is also one of the most affected by gang violence.

There is a clash between the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel, which specializes in fuel theft, and the New Generation of Jalisco cartel, one of the strongest and most ruthless gangs in the country.

In late May, eight women and two men were killed in gun attacks on two bars and a hotel in Selaya, the state’s third-largest city.

Since December 2006, when the then government unleashed the much-controversial “war” against drug cartels, with the development of armed forces within the country, more than 340,000 murders have been counted in Mexico, most of which are attributed to the authorities in organized crime gangs.
