Germany: Reference to relations with Greece in the program agreement

by

Special mention of the “culture of memory” that must exist in Germany is included in the program agreement presented yesterday Wednesday by the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Greens and the Liberals (FDP), with reference to relations with Greece, Ukraine and Poland .

“We see the culture of memory as a commitment to democracy and a path to a common future,” the three partners said. They refer to the regime of the former East Germany, to the Holocaust, to National Socialism, to immigration to Germany.

“We feel a special responsibility, especially to our European neighbors. But the current discussions in Greece or Ukraine also show that the joint elaboration has not been completed. We support the Bundestag’s decisions on a Documentation Center on “World War II and German Occupation in Europe” and a place of remembrance for the victims of the Polish occupation and the adventurous German-Polish history. “We want to officially recognize the victims of ‘euthanasia murders’ and forced sterilization as victims of National Socialism,” the program agreement said.

According to Deutsche Welle, the reference to Greek-German relations in relation to the German occupation was included at the insistence of the Greens.
