Food crisis – FAO: The poor will pay more for less food

by

“Global food import spending is expected to increase by $ 51 billion (to $ 1.8 trillion) compared to 2021. Of that, $ 49 billion comes from rising prices alone.” says the FAO in its annual report

As a result of the war in Ukraine, food crises have worsened and by 2022 the “bill” to be paid by food-importing countries is expected to increase substantially due to the rise in the price of cereals and fertilizers, the Food and Drug Administration warned today. and Agriculture of the United Nations (FAO).

“Global food import spending is expected to increase by $ 51 billion (to $ 1.8 trillion) compared to 2021. Of that, $ 49 billion comes from rising prices alone.” says the FAO in its annual report entitled “Supply Outlook” released today.

This increase in the account “is explained in the first phase by price spike (food) and transport and not by the increase in the volume “of exports, the report notes.

In 2022 world production of major cereals will decline, for the first time in four years. The same will happen with global consumption, which is declining for the first time in 20 years, according to the FAO.

World wheat production will fall slightly to 771 million tonnes, partly because the crop is affected by drought – such as in India – and because of the war in Ukraine. In this country, the National Union of Farmers estimates that production will be reduced by at least 40% and exports will fall by half (10 million tonnes).

“The worrying conclusion: many vulnerable countries spend more but do not receive more food,” the FAO notes.

“It simply came to our notice then food securityas they suggest that importers are finding it difficult to finance rising costs. “
