‘Conversation with Biden was frank, we were 1 meter apart, without a mask’, says Bolsonaro

Before speaking at the Summit of the Americas, President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) commented again, this Friday morning (10), on the meeting he had with US President Joe Biden the night before.

“The conversation was very good. We sat less than a meter apart, eye to eye, for 30 minutes and without a mask,” said the Brazilian leader as he left the hotel where he is staying in Los Angeles. “It was a very frank conversation, many strategic technical things that unfortunately you will not know about. But it is very good, beyond Brazil or the USA. It is very good for the world.”

Bolsonaro spoke with the Democrat for the first time this Thursday (9), after more than a year and a half of squabbles between them. On Thursday afternoon, the president had already said that he was “amazed” by the meeting.

Diplomats and other members of the Brazilian government were, in private conversations, surprised by the results of the meeting and said that there was “chemistry” between the US and Brazilian leaders.

Members of the delegation in Los Angeles consider that the visit put an end to the crisis between the presidents. Biden had not spoken to Bolsonaro since taking office in January 2021, and the Brazilian president is close to the Democrat’s predecessor, Donald Trump, even endorsing attacks by the Republican against the American electoral system.

After the meeting, the White House released a statement in which it called the US-Brazil partnership “vital to international efforts to address the climate crisis and ensure peace.” The US government also reaffirmed its support for Brazil’s entry into the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), the club of rich countries.

The note also states that the two presidents have pledged to work in partnership to reduce deforestation, to act jointly in the UN Security Council in the search for a resolution of the Ukrainian War and to “support democratic renewal” – without detailing how will that happen.

On the other hand, the Itamaraty highlighted, in a note, this Friday morning, that bilateral relations are going through a “positive stage, with ample possibilities of deepening cooperation in topics such as energy, defense, space, science and technology and trade and investments, with emphasis on in a greater integration of supply chains in key sectors for the two economies”.

Bolsonaro will make a speech this Friday morning, in the afternoon in Brazil, at the summit plenary.

“Perhaps I will speak a little impromptu on the issue with Paraguay, with Guyana, with Suriname,” he said. Regarding Suriname, Bolsonaro can address the discovery of an oil and gas deposit, and, with Paraguay, the fish farming project in the Itaipu lake, which may have its production expanded.
