In a speech to the Kremlin, Putin once again paid tribute to Peter the Greatto which he referred in a speech earlier that week, on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the birth of the Russian tsar, saying that “Under this ruler, Russia has become a powerful world power, while it was an amazing devotion to our country.”

“Today, we know very well how important it is for the Motherland, for our society and our people to be united” Putin added.

THE Russian president last week compared his policy with that of Peter the Great, when the tsar was at war with Sweden and invaded its territories, as well as Finland, parts of Estonia and Latvia.

“We just visited an exhibition dedicated to the 350th anniversary of the birth of Peter the Great. It is shocking, but almost nothing has changed (…) Peter the Great waged the Great Northern War for 21 years. One would have the impression that when he was at war with Sweden, he took something from them. She did not take anything from them, she returned (to Russia) everything that was hers “, Putin said, among other things, speaking to young businessmen in Moscow.
